Feldenkrais method isn’t for anyone in particular, it’s for everyone!
You can be young, old, big or small, short or long, movement is for everyone.
However, the method can work for specific groups of people, as well for the individual. It can help in a very specific way, it can be tailored to a group or individual for general movement, or for specific improvements and recovery from injury.
And this is the strength of doing an 'Awareness Through Movement' class.
You can find something interesting in every class (known as an ATM lesson), the method teaches you to listen to your own way of physical movements, through your nervous system.
Feldenkrais for Sport
From endurance to skill based sports, the Feldenkrais method can help improve your awareness and consequently your movement.
Every step in a marathon requires a whole system approach, from one step to another. Hitting a golf ball could be considered the other end of a scale, to balance your whole self to move through a sequence of motions that requires your systems to accurately respond with control to strike a ball, for a long distance shot or a controlled putt.
Feldenkrais for Every day life
How much of what you do disappears in non-attentive movement, possibly caused for many by distractions from their electronic devices. We are a slave to our devices ...I am writing this on my phone !.
The distraction is not the phone itself, it’s what you are looking at, however it is the physical device which is giving you sore and painful neck, shoulders, backs and in many cases affecting how you walk and your overall ability to move, walk and breathe!
Imagine the limitations of a fish 🐟, in a small bowl. It’s not easy to see if they are happy or sad, they just continue around within the limits of their bowl.
Now imagine the fish in the ocean, how much further it will travel in a line, no turning, little limiting factors, except possibly being eaten by a bigger fish!
Please, think about your limitations of your movements, both in mind and body. How much do we all limit ourselves, like the fish in the bowl, sometimes believing we are swimming in the ocean!
Movement and thoughts are not indistinguishable, how we think can dictate how we move, and how we move can affect how we think!
Pain will limit both of these functions, limiting our mind and body, like a fish in the fish bowl.
It starts with Awareness
The Feldenkrais method is about restoring our awareness of how we move. This often consists of slow movements in order to reconnect with areas we often lose consciousness of, which leads us to move in a restricted way, limiting our potential. It’s not a difficult concept to understand this can also limit us in the way we think, limiting our thoughts and feelings, reducing living and even how we breathe!
There are many ways to move and there are even more ways to hold yourself, restricting your ability to move.
Awareness through Movement classes
I teach a regular class on Zoom on a Tuesday night, it is a perfect medium for these classes, as you just need a quiet space to lay on the floor and just listen to my instructions. There is no right or wrong movements, you just follow my instructions and invitation to explore different movements and just notice and learn how you feel during and after class.
The classes are also recorded so you can do them at a time that suits if you cannot commit to attending live, you can also repeat the class again in your own time if you wish.
Recording available for you to try for FREE
Live classes will start again in September and hopefully some workshops too. But if you are new to these classes and are curious to try one before then, I can send you a link to a class recording so you see what they are like, just contact myself or Nicky.
